Overview

GitHub’s Observability Delivery team builds company-wide pipelines for logs, metrics, traces, and exceptions. We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer who enjoys solving challenges across software and infrastructure. You’ll write and operate services, deploy observability tools, and make architectural decisions about telemetry systems while partnering with service teams throughout GitHub.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate high-scale pipelines for logs, metrics, traces, and exceptions

Lead cross-team work to identify scaling bottlenecks and improve telemetry collection

Write and maintain production software, primarily in Go and Ruby

Work across cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, networking, and service connectivity

Partner with service teams to understand their observability needs

Own system health through monitoring, incident response, and on-call participation

Provide technical leadership through design proposals, reviews, and mentoring

Required Qualifications

6+ years experience in Software Engineering or related field (or equivalent education/experience combination)

Proven experience coding in languages such as C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python

3+ years building and operating production services in a cloud or large-scale distributed environment

2+ years deploying or troubleshooting production workloads with Kubernetes or comparable container orchestration

2+ years developing production software in Go, Ruby, or comparable language

Preferred:

Experience building shared platforms used by other engineering teams

Experience with logging, metrics, or distributed tracing systems (OpenTelemetry concepts)

Experience operating telemetry pipelines (Datadog or comparable tools)

Experience with Azure or another major cloud platform

Familiarity with networking and distributed-systems operations

Experience leading technical work across teams and mentoring engineers

Key Responsibilities
Design, prototype, and ship highly performant user experiences for GitHub Issues and Projects.
Write, review, and maintain production code primarily in JavaScript (React, TypeScript) and Ruby (Rails).
Solve foundational scaling problems to enable deeper Copilot integration.
Write architecture briefs, build prototypes, and guide technical roadmaps for planetary-scale systems.
Provide technical leadership, mentorship, pairing, and code reviews across a distributed team.
Qualifications
Required:
7+ years of software engineering experience (or 5+ years with a Master's / 3+ years with a PhD / 9+ years without a degree).
5+ years of React experience** at a senior level.
Proven experience delivering production software in languages such as **JavaScript, Ruby, Go, C++, or Python.
Preferred:
1+ years of remote work experience in distributed teams.
5+ years of hands-on experience with modern web stacks (Rails, Go, React, MySQL, GraphQL).
Strong customer focus, data-driven mindset, and exceptional written/verbal communication skills.

Overview
The Technical Program Management (TPM) organization leads the delivery of GitHub's most critical product and business initiatives. This role sits within GitHub's Security Products organization, partnering with engineering, product, and business leaders to deliver capabilities that help developers build secure software. You will help scale the TPM practice through process improvements and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
Partner with engineering leaders, product managers, and stakeholders to build and execute comprehensive program plans
Manage dependencies and risks to ensure teams deliver high-quality outcomes
Provide clear communication, drive alignment, and help leaders make informed decisions
Navigate ambiguity, balance competing priorities, and make thoughtful tradeoff recommendations
Deliver capabilities spanning application security, software supply chain security, AI-powered security, and developer platforms
Scale the TPM practice through process improvements, operational excellence, and reusable tools
Required qualifications
8+ years experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development (or equivalent education/experience combination)
5+ years experience in managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects
7+ years of experience working directly with engineering, product, and business teams in launching new products
Comfortable working in a 100% remote and globally distributed team
Preferred:
Flair for software development projects and ability to quickly absorb new technologies
Experience leading large-scale technical programs involving application security, AI-powered developer experiences, or software supply chain technologies
Expert level knowledge in agile and traditional project management methodologies
Ability to clearly identify project status, articulate complex blockers, and mitigate unexpected issues
Demonstrated success in cross-functional, cross-organizational collaboration
